I guess to understand someone you have to know his or her upbringing. I was raised by a young single feminist philosopher in the inner city of Kansas City, Mo. It is where my mother started my political education and I formed my edge. Since I was an only child, I went everywhere with her. Rallies, classes, it didn’t matter. When I was 9 yrs old she met & married a tall, skinny folk singer/songwriter in a cowboy hat (actually, I met him first and introduced them). A year later we moved to Eugene, OR, and it is there where my heart lays. No matter where I am, Eugene is home, it is were I first tasted the sweetness of defying authority;)
Now, seeing that I was raised not only by a feminist student that also worked, but (later on)a musician as well. I had to learn some self-defense skills, like cooking! I guess that’s why I’m now a chef. I also learned how to mentally shut people out when they start droning on and on, but I’m not so sure that’s a good thing, the switch is now automatic and it gets me into trouble sometimes.
Yes I’m a chef, I specialize in pastries, but I can do anything, test me. I’m have been catering on my own as Dessert First! for almost six years now. When I’m not cooking I’m usually on the land driving a nail into something, using some kind of power tool, or goat wrestling. I am a political activist by day, a party grrl by night and am happiest when both are going on at the same time. I volunteer most of my free time to organizations that fight for the environment and social justice (equal rights, labor rights, the homeless, ect). The rest of my free time is spent either in jail or dancing the night a way….”it’s not my revolution if I can’t dance” –Emma Goldman
Interests
My passion is cooking, but I also love hiking/backpacking/camping, campfires w/marshmallows, music, dancing, mycology, gardening, eco-friendly/light footprint/sustainable building
Organizations I belong to
I don't belong to groups that would have me as a member

Heroes and influences
I think the term “hero” is a bit cliché, we are all humans with the same capacity for greatness, and it’s all about the choices we make. The people I admire and respect are; first of all my grandmother who was not only a Rosie the riveter but also one of the first WAC’s (she was also known to go to bars after work and show off her well earned muscles), Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, Mahatma Gandhi, John Trudell, The Suffragettes,Emma Goldman, Che Guevara (of course), Fidel Castro....I think you get the idea

Amber - Totally kewl profile. This is ON (as you may know) in your state (OR), plus CA and WA. We're trying to make it nationwide... Please read my my post about the MAY 1st strike!
If you agree (please feel free to comment!), let everyone you know become aware... THIS is our (last?) chance--for impeachment, for ending the occupation of Iraq, AT LEAST for forcing our topics into the presidential campaigns!

Whoa, what's up grrl? Don't get me started, you just may end up getting me going on some post-punk anarcho-nihilistic rant that would be totally uncalled for, and possibly illegal. My hair's green, so is Doug, I never forgot the bad trips, and I practice my 2nd amend. rights as much as possible. Need I say more? Seriously, I'm cool.
Hi Amber~
I am happy you have joined us here at A28! Since I've become an 'adult' LOL I tend to avoid "scary" movies...I have my own demons that I struggle with all on my own. :-) And, I love most of Tim Burton's work, especially with Johnny Depp, so I had preconceived expectations going in to see the movie...let's just say I was caught completely off guard by the dark side of this movie! :-) I went to the movie, looking for a nice 2 hour break from the reality of our country & our planet...
I guess if they didn't sing throughout the whole movie it would have been much worse for me to watch. :-)
Anyway, I will probably send you a personal message rather than take up anymore space on your comment board!
One more thing (I just finished reading "About Me") Have you seen Sweeney Todd??? I, too, am a Johnny Depp fan and just saw the movie last night with my daughter.
