In peace, Jess
I've sent this Letter to the Editor to several Chicago-area newspapers:
As you read this, the world faces a grave emergency. The Bush administration is carrying out war crimes and crimes against humanity in your name. These include a war of aggression in Iraq that is taking countless lives, legalized torture of prisoners captured in the “war on terror,” kangaroo courts pretending to be trials, warrantless wire-tapping and data mining operations which invade the Constitutionally-protected privacy of U.S. citizens, and now, saber rattling against Iran. The very nature of U.S. society and its relationship to other countries is being reshaped before our eyes.
Yet the Democratic-led Congress refuses to act in any meaningful way to stop the Bush administration, declaring that impeachment is "off the table," in the words of Nancy Pelosi. Congressional Democrats have voted to authorize $100 billion more for the Iraq war while pretending they are trying to stop it. To quote historian Howard Zinn, "It’s as if, before the Civil War, abolitionists agreed to postpone the emancipation of the slaves for a year, or two years, or five years, and coupled this with an appropriation of funds to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act."
Each day the situation grows more urgent as Defense Secretary Gates extends the duty tours for soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, and aircraft carrier task forces maneuver near Iran poised to launch attacks on orders of the Commander-in-Chief. The torture, the spying, the scapegoating of immigrants, and the unprecedented undermining of habeas corpus-- all continuing.
On April 28, many pro-impeachment, anti-war and human rights organizations are calling for people across the country to make the demand for impeachment VISIBLE everywhere. You can find information about events planned for the Chicago area at www.a28.org.
Big changes are possible, but only if we, as responsible citizens, act. Bush will soon veto the war appropriations bill. His administration will refuse to honor subpoenas in the attorney firings scandal, and it is besieged over opposition at the World Bank to Paul Wolfowitz.
Millions oppose this direction, but they will have to manifest that sentiment in ways that cannot be ignored if people are to have a chance of stopping it.
Hey Edward, I'll be interested to see & hear how the A28 actions play out in the Chicago area. Please post stories and pics if you can to let us know how it went. I'll be posting on the Coney Island action soon afterwards. Good to see you here!
